Ukiah High swimmers knock down Monty – The Ukiah Daily Journal

Last Wednesday, March 30, the Ukiah High School swim team hosted their first league meet of the season in a successful battle against Montgomery High School’s Viking Swim Program. Although a bit shorthanded due to the annual Spring Break holiday for high schoolers, the Ukiah Wildcats scored a decisive win over Monty’s Boys and Girls. The Ukiah Varsity girls took a 90-68 lead over Monty and the Varsity men’s team fought back to a 68-43 victory. The Vikings had no JV program, giving the Wildcats JV an undisputed 66-point win.

“I think it went fantastic,” said new Ukiah High Swim team head coach Kristine Gonzalez. “We were about half our team short for spring break, but everyone here made the effort.”

Gonzalez supported the Ukiah Swim team last year as an assistant coach and took over as head coach this season. Kristine was a former Willits Otters swimmer and had participated in the swim program since she was 5 years old. She had swum competitively until her second year of high school, but had to quit due to a knee injury.

“I fell in love with it (swimming) when I was a lifeguard and was asked if I was interested in being the new assistant coach for the Ukiah Dolphins,” Gonzalez explained. “I am now the head coach of the Dolphins and the Ukiah High team. I love it. It’s so much fun.”

Coach Gonzalez is supported by the swim team’s new assistant coach, Joe Selzer.

Although this was the Wildcat swimmers’ first home win, it was the league’s third meeting of their season. Ukiah High played its first meeting in the North Bay League Oak Division at Santa Rosa High School on Thursday, March 10. The meeting ended with mixed results for the Ukiah High program. The Varsity Girls Team lost 48-23 to the Panthers, while the Wildcat Boys Varsity picked up a heavy victory over the Santa Rosa Boys with a final score of 115-47.

On Thursday, March 17, the Wildcats were defeated by the first other North Bay high school in the league they had faced which also featured a JV team – Maria Carillo. The Varsity Wildcats Boys lost 64-104 to the host MC Boys, while the Varsity Girls fell 32-138. The Ukiah JV team lost 53-104 against Carillo.

The distinction about this year’s Wildcats swimming program, aside from its young but experienced new head coach, is that several of the athletes on this season’s team are a little greener than usual.

“We have a lot of kids who have just entered the team this year.” added Coach Gonzalez. “They’ve done incredible things and they’re making incredible progress.”

Despite the team’s seemingly incomplete experience in competitive swimming at the pre-high school level, their progress so early in the season is palpable.

“Our boys 200m freestyle relay is about 2 seconds off a thinking time for NCS. That means they have a pretty good chance,” explained assistant coach Joe Selzer.

The deadline for all varsity swim teams to be considered for the NCS Division 2 Championships is April 30.

The Wildcats will host their next league meeting on Wednesday, April 6, in their second round against Santa Rosa High School. On Thursday, April 14, Ukiah High will have their chance to redeem themselves on their home turf against Maria Carrillo. And on Thursday, April 21, the Wildcats will wrap up their league season with an away game at Montgomery High School’s Finley Pool.
