Release date, cast, trailer and news

If you’ve been on Twitter for the past few weeks, you know there’s no escaping the eye-catching leaks from all of Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s latest directing project, written by her and her partner Noah Baumbach. Everything from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling rollerblading in fluorescent ’80s-inspired outfits, to throwing photos, to Ryan Gosling’s damn platinum blonde hair. We have seen it all, and yet, not enough. But, until the movie hits theaters next year, we’re patiently waiting to see what happens next. Until then, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the upcoming Barbie film.

Who’s in the cast?

Aside from Robbie, who is expected to star, and Gosling, we can expect a stacked cast list. From what we know so far, Gosling will be playing against Robbie as Ken. But there are rumors that he might not be the only Ken in the movie and Robbie might not be the only Barbie.

Although in unspecified roles, here is the list of several others who should make appearances: Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, N’Cuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey (who, by the way, looks suspiciously like Robbie,) America Fererra, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Demetriou.

Saoirse Ronan and Dua Lipa would also be in the next film. Ronan and Gerwig have previously worked together on both Little woman in 2019 and lady bird in 2017, so an appearance by the Irish actress comes as no surprise.

What’s the plot?

This we cannot say with certainty. Filming has just started, so a trailer is yet to come. However, we do know that there are a few twists to come and the movie probably won’t be a simple, fluffy movie a la barbie’s life in the dream house.

Talk to The Hollywood ReporterMargot has confirmed that we can expect to see something beyond what we expect.

“People immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what it is,'” she said, “But our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you think, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.'”

Before rushing to dance rehearsals, perhaps to Barbieconfirmed Simu Liu to QG that the film will not be a musical. He does, however, hint that the movie is “wild” and “incredibly unique.”

“I wish I could show you what we do day to day because it’s crazy,” he teased.

When can we expect it?

As announced by Warner Bros., the film is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
