1. 300 – Thenon

In 2006, the blockbuster Spartan story 300 – created by acclaimed director Zack Snyder – took the movie world by storm, due to its gory portrayal and outstanding visual effects of the battle.

Its film noir style of cinematic photography is what made this epic film so unique, but nonetheless there was a solid cast that backed it up as well.

Directed by Gerard Butler who played the infamous King Leonidas, it also assembled a star-studded supporting cast. With game of thrones Lena Headey and British Hollywood royalty Michael Fassbender to name a few, and of course Dominic West as Theron.

Although Theron was not the main character, his role was central as the plot’s antagonist. West nailed the part and made Theron as repulsive as possible – the sinister politician was a traitor, took bribes and a rapist.

His betrayals finally caught up with him when Headey’s character Queen Gorgo ended his time for his crimes.

This film was one of West’s first major film roles, showing off his ability to flex his acting muscles on the biggest stage. He established himself among some great acting talents and his film career took off from there.

2. The Affair – Noah Solloway

Moving on now to a more recent role for Dominic West on the small screen, The Affair was an American drama that explored the emotional effects of intertwined marital relationships.

The series won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in 2015, and West played a big part in that success.

West plays Noah Solloway, a struggling writer, and he features throughout all five seasons. Noah begins the show as a happily married man with children, but that soon changes as there is growing resentment brewing within Noah towards his stepfather.

With growing family pressures and financial difficulties, Noah seeks distraction from it all. This is where we find out about her encounters with Ruth Wilson’s character, Alison Bailey – she’s a waitress but there’s a little more to Alison than meets the eye. Noah is drawn to the excitement and tantalizing nature of this adventure.

West’s character is consistently shown in the show’s worst light, which he portrays perfectly in every episode. As we’ve already mentioned, he plays the villain extremely well, and in this show he’s able to showcase narcissism and dark qualities.

He clearly doesn’t mind choosing roles that might cause a lot of disgust toward his characters from viewers, but people can’t argue with his talent for bringing these “monsters” to life.

3. The Wire – Jimmy McNulty

The Jimmy McNulty Yarn

Perhaps Dominic West’s biggest role, but certainly his breakthrough, West features in the critically acclaimed and highly rated award-winning television show. Thread.

West stars as Jimmy McNulty, a Baltimore police detective out to bring down local drug gangs.

McNulty’s personal life is a mess, he sleeps on a mattress on the floor in his apartment and he is estranged from his wife. Jimmy drinks heavily to calm his days in the police but also to numb the reality of his botched life.

What he lacks domestically, he makes up for in his profession — West can perfectly exploit a workaholic, driven persona within the Baltimore Police Department. His desire to succeed against the odds of bringing down Baltimore’s drug gangs and cleaning up the streets drives you to support him throughout.

McNulty’s character traits are what the viewer appreciates and also attracts. He is charming and cheeky and has a great ability to get into hot water but then escape without being scolded.

Above all, Jimmy can maintain a strong moral compass in an industry plagued by scandal and corruption. Its bravery in pushing the boundaries of its tenure makes for excellent television.

West has a unique ability and knack for provoking his elders in the role to get the resources he needs – that’s how he can make inroads in the war against drug dealers and their notorious overlords.

A career-defining role for Dominic West who took television by storm and took his career to new heights for his stellar performance as the downbeat but lovable Jimmy McNulty.

4. Les Miserables – Jean Valjean

In 2019, the acclaimed Les Miserables was adapted for television on BBC One, with Dominic West playing the central role of Jean Valjean – previously played by Hugh Jackman.

Valjean is a focal point of the series, and West draws on his many years of acting experience to bring the character to life on the small screen. Like we said, West has an incredible talent for portraying the villain and relishing in sinister traits, but in this series he’s able to show the viewer that he can be a protagonist too.

West explores and excels in bringing the themes of redemption, compassion and generosity from Victor Hugo’s novel to our televisions. But Jean Valjean must first embark on a character-defining journey before becoming so humble, which the series deftly follows from episode to episode.

His hard work and fight against adversity is something most people can relate to, and he wins the hearts of viewers. Valjean is shaped by these unfortunate circumstances; West does a great job of showing his ability to change.

He is the hero of the story, and Dominic West has the ability to act to show the process of the demands it takes to be a good man amid so much injustice and torment. A testament to West’s range and acting abilities, Jean Valjean is a character representation of the British actor’s highest caliber.

A newer role for West, where you can see his many years of experience flowing into this story where he’s able to show the many sides of this character throughout the series.

5. Brassic – Dr. Chris Cox

Brassic Dr. Cox

Dominic West has a strong supporting role in the Sky Original comedy series Copper, located in a rural village in the north of England. West plays local GP Dr Chris Cox, but not your average doctor.

In a show packed with plenty of British stars and up-and-coming talent such as Joe Gilgun and Michelle Kegan, West is the crown jewel of the show. Not only because of his Hollywood status, but more importantly for what he brings to the role and the impact of this character on the series.

Dr. Cox and Gilgun’s character, Vinnie, developed a bromance during their regular dates/drug dealings. Dr. Cox’s office is a safe space for Vinnie to vent and air his demons away from his pack, it becomes a two-way street of trust where Cox hilariously and honestly admits his own vices – mostly sex-related.

Again, we see a different style of acting than West – he shows his variety of acting skills away from his usual dramatic and tense style. The spectator is entitled to his humorous side which does not take itself seriously.

His hysterical and embarrassing sexual difficulties make television a side game. While he’s strayed from his serious style in this role, he’s able to bring much of the seediness to the character he’s developed over the many years of playing the dastardly sleaze in the cinema and television.
