Netflix Original Movie ‘Curtiz’ Coming March 2022

Netflix soon loses award-winning black-and-white Hungarian film Curtis just two years after it was added to Netflix worldwide.

Removal dates are currently posted on the Netflix page for Curtis with a “Last day to watch on Netflix” notice listed for March 24, meaning it will be removed on March 25, 2022.

Directed by Tamas Yvan Topolanszky, the film follows driven and arrogant director Michael Curtiz who must deal with studio politics and family drama during the troubled production of “Casablanca” in 1942. All this as America prepares to enter World War II.

The story is based on true events which are articulated in this post from The Irish Times as well as the film itself.

Curtis was written by Zsuzsanna Bak and stars Ferenc Lengyel and Evelin Dobos. The film is widely spoken in English and Hungarian.

The film is in the same vein as the David Fincher film released later man which detailed the production of Citizen Kane. This film was much more successful for Netflix winning 2 Oscars for the streamer. However, its performance on Netflix itself is up for debate.

Curtiz was first shown in Canada at a film festival in September 2019. It has subsequently been exhibited at numerous festivals, including several in the United States, Italy, Poland and Hungary. It won awards at the Boston International Film Festival and the Burbank International Film Festival.

It wasn’t until 2020 that Netflix acquired the worldwide rights to the film and released it on March 25, 2020 without much fanfare.

Unfortunately, the rights that we know now were only acquired for a few years and those that are now due to expire worldwide.

Netflix Originals leaving Netflix isn’t particularly new, but this removal shows just how short some of these titles are on Netflix. Netflix Original is arguably half the problem here with the connotation that just because something is a Netflix Original, it belongs to Netflix. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
