The first feature-length documentary by the Irish filmmaker Luc McManus, North Circular [+see also:
film profile]will begin its home theatrical distribution on December 2, via Madhouse Films in cooperation with Robert Finn, from Break Out Pictures. Cineuropa brings you the exclusive trailer for the film.
The award-winning musical documentary travels Dublin’s legendary North Circular Road from Phoenix Park to Dublin Port, meeting characters and hearing their personal stories, often told through music and song. The film celebrates the vibrant cultural heritage of the various neighborhoods connected by the road, while addressing the challenges of life along the famous thoroughfare.
Shot in black and white and in 4:3 Academy format, North Circular also tackles pressing contemporary issues, including the battle to save the legendary Cobblestone Pub, the center of Dublin’s new folk and traditional scene, from destruction at the hands of property developers.
As well as including the characters’ heartfelt and intimate stories, the film tackles tales from Irish history, such as imperialism, revolution, incarceration, institutionalization, the housing crisis and the struggle for peace. gender equality. It also includes musical performances by artists who live along the Northern Circular, including Lisa O’Neill, John Francis Flynn, Sean O Tuama, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, Ian Lynch and Gemma Dunleavy. It features contributions from historians and writers who live in the region, including Ellen Rowley, Eamon Delaney, Paul Rousse and Catherine Crowe.
“North circular is a personal film”, explains the director. “I have lived right next to the road itself for two decades and I remain fascinated by its variety, by its contradictions, by the competing tensions it finds within itself. Many themes, characters and issues bubble up beneath the surface of the North Circular Road as you travel it. A certain darkness at times, a celebratory energy at others: this unique road encompasses so much diversity of human experience. This film will never be more than a glimpse of life in a few moments in the complex history of this multi-faceted place.
