Martin McDonagh is an English-Irish playwright, screenwriter and director. McDonagh began his career in playwriting in 2003 with the play Pillow. He went on to write several plays and was nominated for four Tony Awards and five Laurence Olivier Awards, of which he won three. McDonagh started directing in 2008 with his first feature film In Brugge before branching out and directing numerous dark comedies, many of which starred actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

Seven Psychopaths was highly praised by critics upon its release, with particular praise for the direction, the cast’s performances, and the witty storyline. The film earned McDonagh multiple Best Director nominations and won him the People Choice Award at Midnight Madness at TIFF.

Starring Farrell and Gleeson as hitmen Ray and Ken, In Brugge revolves around these men after passionate work who retire to Belgium to lay low. While the two simply hope to bide their time in the city of Bruges, they discover much more than they ever could have bargained for. The film received praise for the cast’s performances, and particular attention was given to McDonagh’s direction on the film. Farrell won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy for his performance. McDonagh won the BAFTA award for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar in the same category.

Three billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri is a critically acclaimed one-of-a-kind film, its value only backed by its countless accolades. McDonagh garnered a few nominations for his direction and screenplay, winning the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay.
