Adventure sports competition makes East Clare debut

Exhilarating action and beautiful scenery will combine in a new sporting competition taking place in East Clare next month.

The burgeoning sport of Adventure Racing makes its Banner debut on May 7 at the inaugural Lough Derg Adventure Challenge.

Considered the ultimate outdoor event, teams of two will cycle, hike and paddle around scenic Lough Derg with a choice of courses depending on experience.

There are two racing options in the Lough Derg Adventure Challenge this year. For beginners and new to team adventure runners, the Sprint Race features a shortened course (over 3 hours), where navigation is simplified, with an easy-to-follow map provided and plenty of support available. You can also use a road bike, mountain bike or hybrid in the sprint race.

Experienced adventure runners can participate in the endurance race, which is a little longer (over 7 hours) and requires navigation and map reading skills. Mountain bikes are mandatory for this race.

Adventure racing enthusiast Lorraine Horan says: “Lough Derg is the perfect location for such an event with great paddling, cycling, running and trekking options on the doorstep. It’s an outdoor mecca!

Limerick-based Lorraine has been involved in adventure racing for several years, having been introduced to the sport by friends.

She now competes in events in Ireland and overseas and encourages anyone interested in outdoor sports to try the Lough Derg Adventure Challenge in May.
